Wonderful Korean Food

Hello, everyone! My name is Hye-soo Kim in the fourth grader at Jangja Elementary School. Today, I am going to talk about wonderful Korean food.

Imagine you have to live on a deserted island for a week. You have to bring only one kind of food, but there are just two choices _ Korean food and fast food.

What’s your choice?

For me, the answer is absolutely Korean food. Only thinking of getting fast food for a week without Kimchi makes me feel sick, and I’ll say, “Oh My God!”

Kimchi is the most popular Korean food for foreigners. Like many other Korean food, Kimchi is not only delicious but also very nutritious.

When an epidemic called “SARS” was spreading across the world, especially in Asian countries, between 2002 and 2003, there was no Korean victim at all!

Many scientists believe that it was due to Kimchi we eat everyday because the pickled vegetable dish is effective in preventing SARS, avian influenza, and other virus growth and infection.

Let me introduce more Korean food.

Korean bean paste stew, or “doenjang jjigae,” is one of the most famous and typical Korean cuisines. Along with Kimchi, it’s Koreans’ everyday house food.

Doenjang is a fermented food like cheese and wine, or Japanese miso, but it has much deeper flavor and healthful ingredients.

The taste of fermented soybean might strike foreigners, but once you’re familiar with it, I can tell you that you can’t stop eating it.

Here is a popular Korean fast food, Gimbap. I want to call Gimpab as the Korean version of Western sandwiches because it’s a necessity during picnics in Korea.

Gimbap is made from steamed rice and various ingredients like vegetables, beefs, tuna, etc, depending on your tastes. It is rolled in sheets of dried seaweed and served in bite-size slices.

For foreigners, a variety of colors of vegetables in the roll, including green cucumbers, carrots in orange color and yellow pickled radish “Danmuji”, would be very attractive.

Lastly, I want to introduce my favorite food ‘ddeokbokggi’, which is a broiled dish of sliced rice cake, meat, egg and seasoning.

Ddeokbokki is a popular snack for Korean men and women of all ages. It is easily found at snack bars or street vendors.

Students love it because of its good taste and cheap price. They usually have Ddeokbokggi on their way back to home from school, and it tastes really fantastic!

Ordinary Ddeokbokki is red and spicy as are most Korean food. But you can enjoy many different styles of Ddeokbokki these days by adding seafood, ramyeon noodle, cheese, beef and other foodstuffs.

How about trying Ddeokbokki with Gimbap? They’re the perfect match!

Besides the food I introduced just before, there are lots of delicious Korean food.

There is a phrase: Seeing is believing. As for these wonderful Korean foods, I can say “tasting is believing.” Why don’t you try Korean cuisines now and enjoy their unique and fantastic tastes?

Thank you for listening.
