 THE HISTORY OF THE BICYCLE

                              4th class2  Song Seo Hui

Good afternoon.

Today, I''m going to tell you about the history of the bicycle.

Bicycles are the one of the useful ways of transportations.

When we go to schools, go to the supermarkets, or go to the picnics,

it helps us to go fast to the right place and keep us healthy.

For example, in my case, I come to school by my bicycle in the morning. At that time, I feel refreshed through the clean and fresh morning air. Also, it makes my heart strong. But, have you ever thought about the origin of bicycle when you ride it?

How did it look like? Who invented these things? Me? Never.

I think you either. So, at this time, I''ll tell you about the history of

the bicycle, give your attention to me and listen carefully please.

The modern bicycle, like the ones used by professionals in the Olympics, the Tour de France or the Tour de Korea which was held during April 22nd to May 2nd is an amazing machine.

Some bicycles even cost as much as a car!

Today''s bicycles are very different from the first bicycles, and they

have improved greatly since their beginning.

In 1818, Karl von Drais, a German forest ranger, invented a two-wheeled machine to help him travel around the woods quicker.

It had no pedals, so he had to push it with his feet. Karl von Drais

named his bicycle a "hobbyhorse." In 1839, a Scottish man named

Kirkpatrick Macmillan added foot pedals. This was the beginning of the modern bicycle.

The bicycle became popular in the 1860s. In 1863, Pierre Michaux, a French carriage maker, made improvements to the bicycle.

However, it was still not perfect. It had a huge front wheel and was uncomfortable to ride. Its nickname was the "boneshaker."

Then in 1885, handlebar grips and a chain were added.

This bicycle was the "Rover." And in 1888, John Boyd Dunlop,

a Scot, used a garden hose filled with air as a tire.

This made riding more comfortable. Soon, everyone was buying and riding bicycles, and over the years, the bicycle continued to improve.

Today, the bicycle is still a very popular form of transportation and

recreation. Thanks to the history of the bicycle, riding a bicycle can

now be comfortable and fun. But, we must remember that we should

put our helmets and safety equipments when we ride bicycle to protect us from the injury. Thereby, It will be the enjoyable time with

bikes. If the riding is with your family or someone you love in the fresh air, nothing is better than this.

Why don''t you go riding right now?

Thank you for attention.
